Becoming a mom is one of the most amazing experiences in life.
Even though we can’t control everything, we can prepare to live it with more peace and confidence. Here are 5 things I would definitely do before giving birth:
1. Inform myself about pregnancy and birth preparation courses (especially those designed for expats)
Understanding how birth works in the country where you will deliver, the medical system, hospital protocols, pain management options, and your rights, can make you feel safer and more in control. Many courses for expats are available in English and include cultural guidance and partner involvement.
2. Schedule a consultation with a lactation specialist
Breastfeeding is natural, but it is not always easy. You don’t need to make a decision of how you are going to approach this, but getting guidance from the start can help with proper latch, prevent pain, and boost your confidence from day one.
3. Create a postpartum plan (emotional and practical)
Organize who will help at home, how to handle visits, what to do on tough days, and who to reach out to if you feel overwhelmed or sad. The postpartum phase deserves just as much planning as birth.
4. Set up a basic health kit for baby and another one for mom
Digital thermometer, saline solution, sterile gauze, diaper cream, breast pump, cold/hot packs. Having everything ready saves stress when you need it most.
5. Take a baby and infant first aid course
Knowing how to react in case of choking, fever spikes, allergic reactions, or emergencies like infant CPR can make all the difference. It’s one of the most empowering preparations you can make as a new parent.
Preparing isn’t about having everything under control, it is about giving yourself peace of mind to live this moment with more love, awareness, and confidence.
